Cash Brown

Making art, caring for art and making art accessible is not just a living, it’s an obsession!

Since taking on my role as Curator and Conservator at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka (MADE) in mid 2015, I have still been rather engaged in a number of exciting projects, including being selected as one of the artists for the Biennale of Australian Art  (BOAA) to be held in Ballarat in 2018. See http://www.boaa.net.au/ for details. I have made and exhibited more art, and continued my Fascinator series which draws upon my own fascination with Dutch, Flemish and Spanish old masters.

Although MADE is a museum focused on the Eureka story, socio-political history and human rights, I have curated some really interesting exhibitions there. I must admit the challenge has been very rewarding, and the parallels between developing museum and art exhibitions are all there. The rigour involved in historical research where there is scant information in the literature is a tough task when all of the subjects are long since dead and left few records of their lives.

Having recently completed a Master of Cultural Materials Conservation, applying years of careful study, observations, and fine motor skills to the restoration and care of easel paintings is naturally a sympathetic vocation. It has opened a lot of doors and helped with my research and writing skills. Plus I get back to my nerdy science roots and have rekindled a love of chemistry and care for collections in a  more considered way.
